We Value Black Lives

Keisha Mercedes Mecca pic 3We know that systemic racism is destructive to communities of color, and the killings of unarmed Black men and women by police have exacerbated the emotions of fear and anger many people of color feel towards law enforcement. For young people, they feel especially vulnerable because although these adults are supposed to protect and serve, the police make them feel less safe. Not only do they worry about themselves, they also worry about everybody else in their family.

As therapeutic professionals, we see up close the profound impact of the pandemic trifecta – COVID-19, the economic downturn, and increased reporting of unnecessary, fatal use of force by police.

“We support the Black Lives Matter movement not just because of our own identities, but because we know that if our community members do not feel safe, our society will remain divided.”

While not all police abuse their power, we cannot, however, ignore the fact that African Americans are disproportionately impacted by those who do. Research shows that these events have increased the overall levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in people of African descent, much of which has manifested into national (and even worldwide) anti-racism protests. At their core, we understand that these protests are not just about unjustifiable police brutality, but the lack of value placed on Black lives.

We support the Black Lives Matter movement not just because of our own identities, but because we know that if our community members do not feel safe, our society will remain divided. The videos of police cruelty are not only a reflection of certain individuals’ inhumanity, but also a system that rationalizes and reinforces this behavior. We therefore call for policy makers across the nation to use their power and influence to institutionalize equitable policies and practices in all areas of society, especially in the education, health, and criminal justice systems.  Without systemic change, any progress we make in our work ultimately will be undone.

We encourage you not only to take care of your physical health but to pay special attention to your mental health during this chaotic phase in our nation’s history.

At The MECCA Group, we will continue to do our part and provide safe spaces, care, and support for those we serve. We encourage you not only to take care of your physical health but to pay special attention to your mental health during this chaotic phase in our nation’s history. When everything seems so precarious, it is easy to lose our footing, so it will be important for us to reconnect with each other and strengthen the bonds with those who love and support us.

We see you.

We hear you.

We are with you.
